Virtual IP Group Intros MP3 Decoder For Xtensa Processor

By Mark Long -- e-inSITE, 4/2/2002

Virtual IP Group has introduced an MP3 audio decoding application that has been tuned for deployment in tandem with the Xtensa IV processor core from Tensilica

Offering support for VBR and free-format-encoded MP3 tracks, Virtual IP Group's CS6002 is being offered as a software library object or in source code format for deployment in embedded applications that require MPEG 1/2 layer 3 decoding.

Featuring a 16 MHz processor overhead for CD audio-quality operations, the decoder has been efficiently optimized for the Xtensa processor using C, assembly and Tensilica Instruction Extension (TIE) languages.

"With the addition of customer defined instructions and other application packages such as Dolby Digital (AC-3) and Bluetooth available through our Xtensions Network, Tensilica's licensees can efficiently develop differentiated SOCs that meet demanding cost, power and time to market requirements," said director of strategic alliances Larry Przywara in a prepared statement.

The CS6002 audio application is available right now under a royalty-free license fee structure that begins at $30,000. Deliverables include the software application object code or source code as well as the processor configuration, including the Xtensa processor TIE hardware extensions.
