Greetings, and welcome to CommVerge, a special section of EDN. Once a month in this space, we'll be delivering viewpoints on the convergence space—the large and diverse market that's growing out of the collision of computers, communications, and consumer electronics. If you haven't already done so, I invite you to check out the rest of this month's edition.

Some of you may be familiar with CommVerge from its previous incarnation as a stand-alone monthly magazine. (If so, it's nice to see you again.) But for those who are encountering CommVerge for the first time, here's a brief soliloquy explaining what it's all about and why you should care.

"Convergence" is a much-maligned term, but we use it with pride. Enormous opportunities are arising as voice, video, and data networks coalesce. Countless connected products and services are popping into existence as fast network connections penetrate businesses, homes, and public hot spots. We firmly believe that convergence will drive the next wave of growth in the tech industry and, by extension, the whole economy. That's why we launched CommVerge magazine in January 2000. And that's why—despite the slings and arrows of outrageous economic misfortune—we're keeping it going here and on our Web site (www.commvergemag.com).

You'll find CommVerge to be a little different from, yet complementary to, the excellent magazine that hosts it. Whereas EDN focuses tightly on the design task and how to do it better, CommVerge takes a wider view. We strive to provide a bird's-eye view of how technologies from the backbone to the client device fit together. And we work to analyze the make-or-break business issues that surround emerging convergence products and applications.

This month you'll find a feature article ("Logical combination") discussing the wisdom (or lack thereof) of chips that combine RISC and DSP functions. You'll also find an installment of our Gear section, which charts the evolution of emerging products. In future months, you'll find analysis pieces, Guest Opinion columns by industry insiders, and our popular hands-on feature, Inside the Digital Den.

We hope that you'll find these pages to be a worthy addition to EDN and a valuable resource in their own right. If you like what you see, please be sure to visit www.commvergemag.com and sign up for our email newsletter. See you next month.
