Multimedia Software Heads For J2ME-enabled Micro Devices

By Mark Long -- e-inSITE, 1/22/2003

AMN Corporation has introduced a new wireless software product featuring the ability to capture, share and play back MPEG, WAV, JPEG, AU, MP3 and MIDI files on Java-enabled micro devices such as mobile smart-phones, PDAs, AutoPC, and certified J2ME MIDP technology platforms.

Targeted at compatible GSM cellular and emerging TCP/IP satellite band networks, the software will also function over multiple OEM device and carrier packages from Hitachi, Motorola, Nextel, Nokia, Samsung, Sanyo, Sprint PCS, and the Thuraya mobile satellite system for the Middle East, reports the company. Low-end DSP processing capabilities are also supported through the integration of an embedded virtual machine (EVM).

End-users will be able to install the new MediaBroker application by accessing designated OTA (Over-The-Air) deployment channels that will be provided by cellular service carriers and wireless software distributors, reports the company. The preview version of MediaBroker will initially require a minimum of 4MB of memory. The company also says that it expects to eventually add additional device memory support for 64MB memory cards.

MediaBroker has also been designed to enable the secure distribution of software and multimedia content, both privately and publicly, through the use of the latest Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology. The product architecture reportedly integrates a resource adapter module that can accept various provider plug-ins from commerce-based media content providers. The company claims that the product can also host a variety of intelligent two-way features that range from high-end MFS service centers capable of Enterprise media processing to transcoding via the wireless carrier's back-end.

The preview version of AMN's MediaBroker is scheduled to become available later in 1Q03.
