UV LED aids crime-scene investigations and more

By Bill Schweber -- EDN, 2/6/2003

A family of UV-emitting LEDs from LEDtronics targets applications such as forensic equipment, ID-card checking, gem appraisal, and biological and pharmaceutical instrumentation and calibration systems. Depending on the model, these LEDs produce their light at 370, 390, 395, 400, 405, or 410 nm. At 10-mA typical forward current and 3.7V forward voltage drop, radiant-flux output is typically 10 mW for most wavelengths. You can use the T13/4 (5-mm)-base LEDs with wire-wrap and through-hole mounting, and they cost 17 cents to $2.04 (1000), depending on wavelength and associated semiconductor technology (Picture).
