Switch RTOSs with no application-code changes

By Graham Prophet -- EDN, 3/20/2003

MQX is ARC's royalty-free real-time operating system for its series of ARCTangent configurable-processor cores and for other popular architectures, including ARM. If you are using MQX, OS Changer lets you reuse legacy code written for other operating systems, such as pSOS and VxWorks, without rewriting the application. OS Changer covers approximately 90% of the kernel APIs; the remaining 10% of APIs, ARC claims, are rarely used.

ARC calls this product a changer rather than a translator because it does more than provide a 1-to-1 mapping of system calls between operating systems, which can leave the need to change the source code of the application. The resulting code is always optimized for MQX because the mappings and changes occur at compilation. You can therefore reuse a code base to more quickly perform development and to ease the transition to a different OS.
