Bright LEDs keep their cool

By Bill Schweber -- EDN, 4/3/2003

A family of surface-mount LEDs from the BivarOpto Division of Bivar provides high intensity and simplified cooling implementation. The Solaris SM series, targeting instrumentation, daylight-visible displays, and automotive applications, has luminous intensities of 1400 to 2000 mcd and total flux levels of 4000 to 5500 millilumens when you drive them with currents of 75 to 175 mA (Picture). A proprietary heat sink in the LED substrate and lead-frame structure provides cooling wings that require no pc-board cladding area to handle the expected dissipation of approximately 500 mW. The 6-mm-sq LED packages measure 1.5 mm high and are available in blue, green, red, yellow, and white. Typical price is $1 (1000).
