Kit eases you off the grid and onto LEDs

By Bill Schweber -- EDN, 5/29/2003

With new 12V LED systems from LEDtronics, you can build a complete, indoor, solar-powered lighting system. The SLR001/002, which differ in power and illumination level, include solar panels; 12-ft-long, 16-gauge cables; 3A, 20-hour batteries; voltage regulators; a trio of white-LED lamps; and light sockets (Picture). The $365 SLR 001 comes with a 10W solar panel and cluster lamps of 24 LEDs each and operates for eight hours when fully charged. Its LED lamps are designed for a 40° light spread and emit 36 end-lumens per bulb.

The $240 SLR002 uses a 5W solar panel and nine-LED cluster lamps with a 14 end-lumen per lamp rating; operating time is typically twice as long as that of the SLR001 but with lower output levels. Recharge time for either system is approximately 12 hours under sunny skies at moderate latitudes.
