Modular data-acquisition system offers possibilities galore

By Dan Strassberg -- EDN, 5/29/2003

Yokogawa's highly configurable, modular, and networkable DaqMaster MX100 uses an external PC as a host (Picture). Each of the system's desktop- or DIN-rail-mountable units resembles a PLC (programmable-logic controller), but the units complement rather than compete with PLCs; you need not use the MX100 with a PLC. Systems can comprise one to 20 units; a 20-unit system, all of whose units contain six 10-channel measurement modules, provides 1200 channels.

The backbone of every unit is the baseplate. Baseplates, which are available in various widths, accommodate backplanes of similar width. Depending on its width, a backplane accommodates a main module and one to six measurement modules. The measurement modules, most of which offer 10 channels, incorporate screw terminals for connection of input or output signals, signal conditioning, high-voltage input-to-output isolation, and—on modules that accept analog inputs—analog-to-digital conversion. Some of the modules make no measurements but instead provide digital outputs. (Perhaps analog outputs will follow.) The main module incorporates a line-operated, 100 to 240V, 50- or 60-Hz power supply that powers not only the module itself, but also all of the measurement modules that share the backplane with it.

Yokogawa provides a variety of host-PC software for MX100 systems. The company prides itself on the small amount of memory the software occupies and the high speed at which it handles real-time inputs and outputs. One way in which Yokogawa achieved the high speed and compactness was to eschew bells and whistles, such as 3-D graphical effects on on-screen pushbuttons. Such effects merely slow operation and consume system resources. Prices begin at approximately $1600 ($160/channel) for a 10-channel unit, including baseplate, backplane, main and measurement modules, and a basic software package. Increasing the channel count reduces the per-channel cost.
