LED series is bright, nonacademically

By Bill Schweber -- EDN, 6/12/2003

Vishay's TLMx33xx series of LEDs offers 630-nm super-red, 617-nm red, 605-nm soft-orange, and 588-nm yellow devices in aluminum-indium-gallium-phosphorous technology (Picture). These LEDs are available in a standard PLCC-2 surface-mount package, which measures 3×2.8 mm, and can handle forward currents as high as 50 mA. Depending on color and version, luminous-intensity levels range from 160 to 1250 mcd, with a 120° half-intensity angle. Target applications include illuminating dashboards, backlighting for audio- and video-system switches, signals, and signage. The luminous-intensity ratio, which correlates with the evenness of the lighting emission, is 1.6 or lower per packing unit. Thermal impedance of these LEDs is 400°C/W. Prices start at 8.4 cents (1000).
