Copper backplane runs at 10 Gbps
By Nicholas Cravotta -- EDN, 6/26/2003
Winchester Electronics has introduced the SIP1000, a passive-interconnect platform supporting 10-Gbps serial-data transmission over copper backplanes without requiring active-equalization techniques. A single-piece, compression-mount connector, the SIP1000 is initially available in densities of 46 differential signal pairs/linear in., and plans for a 23-differential-pair, half-height signal module is in the works.
The SIP1000 includes an integrated power system, a compression-contact architecture that eliminates the need for highly capacitive, press-fit, pin-in-hole terminations, such as those in two-part connector systems, and a shielded-differential-pair-conductor structure for maintaining a 100Ω transmission path for each pair. Internal connector crosstalk is less than 1% between pairs. Worst-case connector-launch via crosstalk isolation is 40 dB.
The SIP1000 will become available in the third quarter of 2003 at $2.75 per differential pair (high quantities).
