Power inductors take the low-profile route

By Bill Schweber -- EDN, 7/10/2003

Switching supplies often need inductors, and current levels can be surprisingly high, even in today’s low-power world. The DXM series of power inductors from the CoEv Magnetics unit of Tyco Electronics handles currents as high as 30A with inductances of 0.2 to 10 μH in a 13×13-mm footprint case with 6.4-mm maximum height (Picture). The design uses a nontoroidal winding around a ferrite core and a ferrite case; the device’s structure enhances contact coplanarity for ease of soldering and increased field reliability and for restricting stray and fringe fields. The lead-free inductors sell for 45 cents (100,000).
