Transformer feels your current yet eschews physical contact

By Bill Schweber -- EDN, 10/16/2003

Providing current-sensing for power supplies and current-detection applications, a surface-mount transformer from Vishay again shows the versatility of this venerable passive device, which Michael Faraday invented in the mid-19th century.

The company’s LPE-3325-CST is available in standard turns ratios of 30-, 40-, 50-, 70-, and 125-to-1 and performs at frequencies of 100 kHz and higher (Picture). Secondary inductance is 180 μH to 3 mH at 100 kHz and 0.1V; maximum secondary resistance is 1 to 7.7Ω with 6A rating. The lead-free units operate from –40 to +130°C and have 6.7×8.2-mm footprints and 5.2-mm heights. The devices sell for $1 (1000).
