They still make Schottkys, don’t they?

By Bill Schweber -- EDN, 10/2/2003

In the world of million-active-device ICs, it’s hard to believe that the simplest of all semiconductors—the diode—still has a vital role. But it does, as International Rectifier’s IR140CSP FlipKY Schottky diode demonstrates (Picture). The manufacturer claims that this diode is the smallest 1A, 40V surface-mount diode you can get. Targeting power circuitry in battery-powered and portable products, this BGA-packaged device measures 1.5×1.5 mm, far smaller than available SMA and leadless devices, and has a 0.8-mm height.

As an additional benefit, the diode dissipates its heat directly from the die without an intervening package with a maximum junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of 75°C/W; typical junction-to-pc-board resistance is 55°C/W. Maximum forward-voltage drop for this diode at 1A and 125°C is 0.38V. The device costs 25 cents (10,000).
