Motorola SPS Becomes Freescale Semiconductor

Online staff -- Electronic News, 2/17/2004

Motorola Inc. has dubbed its soon-to-be spun off semiconductor company Freescale Semiconductor.

The spin-off, announced late last year and expected to be concluded this spring, saw Motorola file for a $2 billion IPO in December. At that time, the new company was temporarily named SPS Spinco.

“Freescale Semiconductor provides customers with a heritage built on 50 years of semiconductor experience,” said Scott Anderson, president and CEO of Freescale, in a statement. “We’re pleased to blend the expertise and stability of an established technology provider with the spirit and fresh vision of a new company. Accordingly, we’ve created a name that’s intended to identify our team’s dedication to agility, service and reliability.”

The naming process for Freescale was built upon interviews and research conducted among the company’s employees, customers and industry analysts worldwide, Motorola said.

No ticker symbol has been announced as of yet for the company.
