OMAP Wireless Next Target for SavaJe
By David Manners -- Electronics Weekly, 3/9/2004
SavaJe, the developer of a mobile operating system based on Java, says it is optimizing the OS for the Texas Instruments OMAP wireless platform.
"The SavaJe OS is an attractive solution for OEMs and wireless operators because it provides advanced multimedia services based on an open, flexible platform," said Paul Werp, worldwide marketing director for TI's OMAP platform.
SavaJe supports HTML Web browsing, SMS messaging, games, full motion video and MP3 and enables over-the-air application provisioning and device management, including OS patching and device upgrades.
The once expected bipolar Symbian/Microsoft scenario is not the one that is emerging. While the U.S. is going toward Microsoft, and Europe toward Symbian, the Asia/Pacific manufacturers are already using embedded Linux and the mobile operators Orange and Vodafone are backing SavaJe in which they have a financial interest.
As well as Orange Ventures and Vodafone Ventures, other companies of the five that put up $29.5 million to back Savaje are RRE Ventures, Ridgewood Capital and New Venture Partners.
