Switches support packet-centric telephony

-- EDN, 4/13/2000

You can design a range of voice-over-packet functions and interface them to conventional digital-telephony systems, with Integrated Device Technology's time-slot-interchange switch family (picture). Building on IDT's expertise in areas such as FIFO buffers and multiport memories, the series ranges from 128x128 to 4kx4k for operation at 3.3 or 5V. The company based the parts on established time-division-multiplexed standards. They provide PCM protocol support, a microprocessor interface, and a JTAG port.
