Four-channel encoder captures real-time video streams

By Warren Webb -- EDN, 10/28/2004

Parvus Corp recently announced the MPEG104+, a real-time MPEG-4 video encoder in the PC/104-Plus form factor (Picture). Aimed at transportation, aviation, and defense-surveillance systems, the MPEG104+ module provides dedicated hardware and rate-control algorithms for real-time, high-resolution video encoding for as many as four independent cameras.

In addition to producing high-quality MPEG-4 video streams from PAL/NTSC cameras and other video sources, the MPEG104+ compressor provides four audio-input channels and an analog video-output channel to perform real-time monitoring of the recording sequence. The card also supports motion-detection functions and has programmable or automatic static-gain control for each CVBS (color, video, blanking, and sync) composite channel, as well as programmable video-quality control, and automatic switching between PAL and NTSC standards.

Compatible with Windows and Linux operating systems, the board handles applications with vibration and temperature extremes. The MPEG104+ will be in stock in the fourth quarter, and prices start at $690 (100).
