Passive/active devices suit mobile and computer systems

-- EDN, 11/23/2000

A family of integrated passive and active devices from STMicroelectronics provides ESD protection, EMI filtering, and a host of other functions. The devices, dubbed IPADs, are available in a variety of package formats: SSOP-24, SOT-23, SOT-323, lead-frame CSP (chip-scale package), and flip-chip (solder bump). The library of devices available for integration includes resistors from 1Vto a few hundred kilohms, capacitors from 10 to 500 pF, ESD-protection diodes, and Schottky signal diodes. The ESD-protection diodes are TVS (transient-voltage-suppression) types.

Devices in development include inductors, higher value capacitors, and bipolar transistors. The company claims IPAD devices can save as much as 50% board space in comparison with discrete-component networks. IPADs are available in custom configurations, with PSpice-modeling assistance from STMicroelectronics. A number of standard networks are available to provide both ESD protection and EMI filtering in particular applications. Examples include a parallel-port (IEEE 1284) termination network, a USB termination network, and a keyboard and mouse filter. The ESD protection and EMI filtering inherent in IPAD networks comply with applicable IEC and FCC norms.
