CD decoder does MP3

-- EDN, 12/7/2000

Computer-savvy consumers are no longer content with CD players that handle only conventional 74-minute Red Book audio CDs. They want to listen to CD-R discs they've created themselves, containing MP3-compressed audio files and capable of 15 hours or more of uninterrupted playback. MCS Logic addresses this need with its MLC3100 decoder (Picture), which handles all MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 layers including Frauhofer's proprietary low-bit-rate "MPEG-2.5" scheme (see "Digital audio breaks the sound barrier," EDN, July 20, 2000, pg 71).

The 3.3V, $9 (10,000) MLC3100 in an 80-lead TQFP also supports shock-resistant audio-buffering techniques using both no-compression and 8-bit, lossy-compression modes for portable operation; can play back the audio streams in video CDs; and includes a 16-bit DAC.
