India Set for Electronics Growth
By Alex Mayhew-Smith -- Electronics Weekly, 1/31/2006
The electronics industry in India has been boosted by news that Dell is to increase its workforce in the country to 15,000 in the next two years.
That follows the recent claim made by the Indian Semiconductor Association’s president, Poornima Shennoy, that India is close to getting a semiconductor fab.
Dell also said it will set up a manufacturing facility in the country.
Although not all of the staff Dell is talking about are engineers – the company has three call centers in the country and is setting up a fourth one – there are 300 product development engineers at a site in Bangalore. The PC maker plans to double the size of this team by 2008.
Shennoy of the Indian Semiconductor Association told the Indian press recently that growth in telecoms in India will encourage higher technology work to come to the country.
