Fujitsu Inks $144.4M Deal for Spansion Fabs

Fujitsu Ltd. has inked a $144.4 million (17 billion yen) agreement to purchase Spansion Japan’s JV1 and JV2 fabs, located in the city of Aizu-Wakamatsu in Fukushima prefecture of northeastern Japan.
The deal, expected to close in Q1 2007, includes the building, machinery for power generation and production facilities. Fujitsu has plans for flash memory at the Spansion plants.
Today’s announcement may well be associated with Fujitsu’s recent dealings with Advanced Micro Devices. The two companies announced earlier this month that they had extended their flash work to form a new memory joint venture that will be marketed under the Spansion brand.
For the immediate future, Fujitsu said it will continue to manufacture certain flash memory products for Spansion that are currently manufactured at fabs JV1 and JV2 under their foundry arrangement.
In addition, Fujitsu will also manufacture logic LSI devices at JV1 and JV2.
