The Dodge Report will point to interesting items on the web that affect electronics executives. Conversely, followers of the blog are encouraged to offer their opinions and observations on, well, err, just about everything and anything. Let's have some fun.

Electronic junk - more than just a nuisance

Sep 5 2006 6:39AM | Permalink |Comments (23) |

In my garage sits a bag of old cell phones, power supplies, a really lousy HP multifunction printer (watch this video!) and a three-year-old defunct RCA TV I bought at Walmart. Disposal is becoming a bigger issue as consumer electronics refresh more frequently. The problem sort of takes takes the thrill out of buy the latest gadget, but I suspect my addiction to buying one or two electronics gadgets every month will not subside. Amazon makes it too damn easy. In the past 45 days, I've bought a Garmin GPS, a Maxtor NAS storage, and HP printer and a lens for my Nikon D50.

As I squeeze to get around that 32-inch behemoth of a TV in my garage, I consider just leaving at the door of the Walmart where I bought it along with a cheap lawnmower that is always painfully hard to start. Alas, I will recycle it on Sept. 16 for $10 at my town's recycling event for solvents, electronics, used oil and other poisonous substances. But I have always thought Walmart and RCA bear some if not much of the responsibility to make sure junk like this isn't tossed into the nearest landfill. Searching "recycling" on the Walmart site yielded 52 hits and almost all were books in recycling, many costing 97 cents. Al least you can toss those into the fireplace.

Bestbuy has a recycling program, but New York state is a little far to go. CircuitCity has a trade-in program called Dealtree. But they're small relative to the rate at which the electronics wares are propagating.

What do you do with your electronic junk?

How is disposal the seller's issue?

Goodwill industries actually has a recycling program for computer systems. They have workers strip the electronic components, resell what they can and then recycle the rest. And its free.

Well I suppose we could put the responsibility on the seller, although I have a feeling that would have an impact on the consumer price index. Up here on the tundra, there is almost no education on recycling. I suppose with our sparce population the landfills are probably not as big of an issue as they are in NY. Personally, give my old computers to my nerd friends for them to play with. Old cell phones get tossed in a cupboard or drawer just in case they ever need to be brought back into service. I am suprised that a man of your tech saavy would have ever purchased an RCA television from Wally-World. I believe the appropriate term for such a product is "craptastic".

Like flackster said, DONATE said items to Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc...get the tax write off and THEY will recycle it. I disagree with ADDING yet another requirement/regulation for a company to deal with. You bought it, you deal with it. If you have old working TVs, computers, printers, monitors, etc...have a garage/rummage sale and make some extra cash for beer money or whatever...Just my 2 cents..

PM? - To you question about seller's responsibility: of course, they should share in the disposal problem. They profit off selling the stuff. But when the stuff is junk and dies prematurely, they should pay ALL the costs, IMO.

John, If something dies prematurely...meaning still under warranty?? then you take the product back and yes, indeed, it is the seller's job to fix or dispose of it. As for stuff being "junk", that falls under buyer beware. FWIW...The only thing worth buying at Wal-Mart is beer. They can't screw that up because they don't actually make it..

Beer AND pretzels, CC. As for the warranty, I'm guessing it has long since expired. Anyway, this TV weighs north of 200 lbs and I'm happy to get rid and all the other overweight CRT behemoths in my home. An often overlooked benefit of plasma, LCD and RP TVs is they are light and easily transportable. As I head toward 60, that's huge!!

John, that's funny. I hear ya man. Anyway, I have a 12 yr old Toshiba stereo TV...old style. It works fine for now and have been putting off getting a new tv. I have done some research on DLP (RP), LCD, and Plasma tvs. I've heard that the new plasma tvs now last longer than 5 yrs as what was originally published about them. My current TV being the benchmark now. The DLP tvs seem a good middle ground between high end and old style, and their picture quality looks good.

"Many schools and charitable organization collect old cell phones. I'm about to donate one that I used for six years, partly because I prefer not to contribute to the junk problem and partly because I get a kick out of keeping electronic equipment in use long after it's obslete. I still use a Windows 98 PC. It does most of what I need to do. If you want to know the future of disposal of electronic items, look to Europe. Their WEEE directive specifies who is reponsible for making recycling possible"---That's a great idea Martin. Also another option I've used with old cellphones is to donate them to a rape crisis/womens' escape center, from violent relationships and such. The centers give these women free cellphones as an emergency communication device if the need arises...
