Broadband Lags in U.S.

Apr 13 2006 12:00AM | Permalink |Comments (14) |

Where does the U.S. rank in broadband penetration?  A lousy twelfth, according to a report released yesterday by the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development. In sheer numbers, the U.S leads with 49.4 million broadbanders or about a third of the worldwide total. In penetration, the top four are Iceland, Korea, Denmark and the Netherlands. That's 26.7 connections per 100 inhabitants in Iceland versus 16.8 here, demonstrating the gulf between haves and have nots in the U.S.  Lots can be gleaned from this report.

Piense el tanque...you raise a good point about how small the leaders what with their homogeneous affluent populations. But at the end of the day, shouldn't everyone in the US have wireless broadband and not have to shell out 45 clams a month like I do to Comcast!??

I am sure if Comcast and the others thought they could increase subscriptions by lowering rates, they would do so in a heart beat. They have obviously figured out an equilibrium price and gone with it.

Actually if you look at cable v. DSL penetration, the latter is twice as big...which suggests to me that cable is losing the battle. Why wouldn't it given that DSL is something like $15 a month cheaper.

In my area which is more rural, cable is much cheaper monthly than DSL. I suppose it differs by region.
