Here’s an update to the PowerSource post of October 15th, Chinese battery company readies hybrid-electric car; gets boost from Buffet’s bucks: BYD has announced it is indeed selling the F3DM PHEV in China, aiming it at government and corporate buyers, and making the F3DM the first production PHEV. The car is priced at about 150,000 yuan or about US$21,900. No word on what the warranteed life of the car’s lithium ion-iron phosphate battery is. Note that BYD Auto’s parent company, BYD got its start as a cell phone battery manufacturer.
The F3DM has not passed any of the safety or emission standards that would allow its sale in the US or Europe. BYD originally set 2010 as the target date for US sales, but has now pushed it back to 2011. Could be an indicator of how difficult it is to modify the car to pass those tests – or it could just be due to the horrific economic climate for auto sales in the US and Europe.
