The MAX4895E VGA port-protector IC interfaces a video-graphics controller and a VGA-port connector. It integrates horizontal- and vertical-synchronous level-shifting buffers, allowing compatibility with VESA VSIS specifications. Suiting use in notebook PCs, desktop computers, servers, and consumer-video applications, the device eliminates the need for the multiple analog and passive components that discrete implementations require. The IC includes ±15-kV (human-body-model) and ±8-kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact-discharge ESD protection on seven VGA outputs, and it supports low-voltage CMOS- or standard TTL-compatible graphics controllers. Additional features include I2C level-shifting using two NMOS devices, 3-pF maximum capacitance on the RGB terminals, and 5-µA maximum quiescent current. Operating over a 5V supply voltage, the device has a –40 to +85°C temperature range. Available in a 3×3-mm TQFN-16 package, the IC costs 69 cents (1000).
