Like it or not, if you are a successful design engineer you will eventually be asked to lead a development project. Unfortunately design engineering and project management require two different skill sets and many engineers are woefully unprepared for that first big leadership assignment. To help with this transition, Timothy Stapko of Digi International has written a detailed article for EDN entitled “Avoiding pitfalls in managing embedded systems projects”. According to Stapko, “Project Management has become so important across a multitude of disciplines that it has achieved the status of a discipline in and of itself.” The article highlights the management issues encountered during the budgeting, scheduling, design, and implementation phases of a project. Take some time to read this new article so you will be ready to handle those hidden hazards and hopefully your first project management assignment will be a success.
