What do your co-workers get paid? New site offers glimpse of salaries

Ever wonder how much the guy in the next cubicle is paid? Or what your title pays at the competition? A new job and career Web site aims to help you find out.

GlassDoor.com hopes to shatter the secrecy around employee salaries by allowing users to anonymously post salary reports and review the companies they work for. 

Brought to the virtual world by the same people behind Zillow.com (the site that estimates the value of some 80 million homes), GlassDoor is just starting up and has chosen to focus on the San Francisco Bay Area and its tech community first.

Intel is one of the companies already rated with 42 employee reviews so far. And, thanks to that veil of anonymity, GlassDoor users aren’t mincing words. “Intel has ethics on the outside, but not when it comes to actual engineering work,” one process engineer says on the site. Ouch.

GlassDoor is an HR nightmare – but it’s a potentially great tool for us worker bees, one that, dependent on user honesty, could provide valuable data for those out there looking for a new job or those in negotiations with their current employer.

Salary numbers seem slightly askew to me, especially on the entry-level positions, but it’s only day two for GlassDoor and there isn’t much to compare against. As more people sign on and more data is accumulated, the site no doubt will expand in its collected reviews and salary posts.

Drat! Now all the pleebs will know how evil I am. Will have to randomize salaries based on how many vowels in last name.

What's to prevent someone from entering a fraudulent salary to skew the data or just to get in and see what a company pays their employees? I see no steps in place to corroborate an individual's claims. Risky business and only entertaining at best since the verity of the data is in question.
