Zune's New Tune: How's $99.99 Sound?

Oct 14 2007 10:30PM | Permalink |Comments (5) |

Yes, it's true, second-generation Zunes are en route, due at your favourite consumer electronics retailer within a month (on November 13, to be exact). And yes, the second-gen 80 GByte HDD-based model will be 27% smaller than its 30 GByte predecessor, with 267% of the first-generation unit's storage capacity, a 14% larger LCD, a 'Zune Pad' combination touchpad and click button, etc.

But before you mentally retire Microsoft's humble first stab at the portable multimedia player market from your acquisition candidate list, check out this blurb from Cesar Menendez' post:

We value and remember our early adopters: everyone who owns or buys a Zune 30GB will automatically get the new features through a firmware update.

Just what are those 'new features'? Cesar again:

  • Wireless sync: wirelessly updates content on the device when it is within range of the PC with the Zune Collection on it, or on the same wireless network. You can start the sync manually or, when it's plugged into AC power, sync will automatically start after 1 minute of inactivity. This is so the battery doesn’t get drained by the automatic sync.
  • Expanded wireless send capabilities: you can now keep a track for three plays (we’ve taken any time restrictions out of the equation) you can also send a track you’ve been sent on to other Zune owners.
  • Lossless playback [EDITOR NOTE: WMA Lossless] will be supported on every Zune
  • Podcasting – that is, automatic RSS-based subscription to both audio and video podcasts via Zune Marketplace.
  • You’ll be able to sync your Vista Media Center TV content to your Zune and watch it on the go.
  • Updated device UI

And why am I telling you this? Because even though Cesar says that the 'Zune 30GB will continue to retail for 199.99' [EDITOR NOTE: down from the original $249.99 MSRP], it appears from where I'm sitting that an inventory closeout firesale is in process:

That's one heck of a deal, folks. Who says it's too early to do your Christmas shopping?

I bought a Zune a few months back and returned it within a week and bought a Zen. ZUNE Software was the worst I've seen. Couldn't convert a single video file without green frames showing up, Would only play limited file types. A complete waste of money,IMO, even at $99. I have an IPOD knockoff that plays those same video files, music, and has an FM radio, will do video games etc. Screen isn't as big as Zune but for $40 it's more than adequate and you don't care if someone steals it out of your vehicle. I'll stick to my Zen for Video movies on the airplane and the knockoff for music. USB connection and drag and drop.

Yeah, it's ironic...if you read some of the recent interviews with Bill Gates, at and subsequent to the recent Zune 2.0 intro, he acknowledges that while the (Toshiba-designed) hardware was solid, the software (esp the PC-side stuff) was pretty cr*ppy...which is particularly embarrassing to him considering Microsoft is first and foremost a software company! In Microsoft's defense, they did a six-month project approval-to-product rush job in order to hit the Christmas 2006 buying season, and in spite of the lousy software the customer approval ratings for Zune 1.0 are still 90+ percent. I 'spect MS has made good use of the 12 months since Zune 1.0's release, and things will be a whole lot more solid this time around. With that said, I'm disappointed that they've restricted the recorded TV show-to-Zune feature to only Windows Vista; I know they're motivated to move folks off XP, but ignoring the installed base of XP Media Center Edition users is unfortunate

Yes, that high consumer satisfaction number fooled me into thinking it was a great product and I suspected that all the complaints were from people that had little experience in file conversions, data transfers and the like to figure out a work around. Turns out those Zune critics were spot on. It may help you to try the erightsoft.com super converter if you haven''t tried it already. Maybe do a column on the freeware. I''ve used it for making my own ringtones, video conversion and now it does Zune (Didn''t a few months ago)
