Police disable your car with microwaves

February 11, 2008

The latest issue of Evaluation Engineering has a very scary editorial about hardware that can be bought today by police departments that will beam microwaves at your car to kill the ECU or ignition module. It will be interesting to see if it will also kill anti-lock brakes. This disturbs me on too many levels to describe, The danger to public heath, the abuse of (RF) power, the worries are unending with the Big Brother device. First the federal government militarized our police forces so they blast into the wrong house and kill innocent people, or the cops get killed and they charge the shooter with murder. Sorry, if a guy is hiding under the bed shielding his 1-year-old daughter from an apparent home invasion, whoever blasts through the door is taking a slug and deserves it, whether they are Mother Teresa or Elliot Ness. So now we are subjects of a king instead of citizens of a republic, and some braniac gives the cops directed-beam weapons. Great.

I completely agree with you Paul. It is scary indeed! Just look at the abuse of tasers - then thing about this device. The insanity and greed of our government is enough to make me want to move to Canada!

I'd rather rely on my own self and not the police. There are WAY too many bad cops out there today not to worry about the weapons they have in their arsenal. Police harassment and abuse of power in today's society is out of control, which is why EVERYONE should own a camera phone with a large memory chip and KNOW HOW TO USE IT! IMO every car should have at least 2 cameras. One in the front and one in the rear so that if you are in an accident not your fault or are harassed by the cops, you can prove it.

Jeepers, relax. Given a system like this, it won't be cheap like radar guns so it won't be on every cop car around. Plus, like any weapon in the police arsenal, it will come with rules of engagement. Just because every police officer except Andy Taylor carries a weapon, that doesn't mean they blast out your windows when you are being stopped for speeding. I would hesitate to say that the federal government militarized our police forces. There have been SWAT teams for decades to deal with the kind of scum we seem to have hanging around the joint. Be careful how you vote or you may just end up being the subject of a queen. Don't take away the tools police need to do their job effectively. Your life may depend upon it.

RF Hardening as consumer product. Did anyone ever actually build a 'stealth' car?
