10 people you didn’t know were engineers

April 13, 2009

My buddy and fellow Croatian Andy Turudic sent along this interesting article about some famous people that you didn’t know were engineers. I like to keep track of stuff like this, just as when I pointed out that actress Hedy Lamarr patented spread-spectrum technology during WWII.

Let us know what you think of this list, as well as any other engineers that have changed careers and achieved some small measure of fame.

It was Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil, the avant-garde composer. Lamarr was a very bright lady. Their idea was based on the way a player piano works. When the Navy found out about that, they laughed it off, saying they didn''''''''t want to put player pianos on ships. More than that, because they developed it during wartime, they assigned the patent to the government, and didn''''''''t make a dime off it.
