AES 2006 - Friday lunch with Analog Devices

October 12, 2006

So after my fiasco getting stranded in the City Thursday night I do sleep til 11:00, not bad for a crack-of-noon analog guy like myself.  Then I go meet Dipert and a whole slew of people from Analog Devices.  Now the first thing I should mention is that these are Digital guys.  And they filled my head with so much digital stuff I forgot the name and subject of the Analog Devices guy that I was really supposed to meet at 2:30.  Oh well.Dipert asks the best questions (all week, to everybody).  My eyes glazed over with all this digital talk.  I did get this one important fact—Sharc is floating point.  Blackfin is fixed point.  I hope that was worth the great lunch Analog Devices bought me at Chevy’s.

I do want to say high to Cynthia Hoye the PR person from AD that got all these meetings together.  I also want to apologize to Analog devices.  With the smell on my jacket from the Dark Star concert the night before and the Lady Speed Stick deodorant that the St. Regis gave me after I got stranded in the city, well I must have smelled like a Rastafarian hooker.  I did learn about that fixed and floating-point stuff though.  Big takeaway huh?

Oh and not to disparage Noam Levine and Scott Van Duyne and Gordon Cooper the software masters, I did want to say high to Kevin Leary who designed the first Passport Encore music software before he came to Analog Devices.  The Encore midi sequencer was the cool program that you could just move the notes with a mouse and see how they looked on a staff.  I could have learned to read music if a played with it a little more.
