Down-rev versions of software you can download
While cruising a forum about my beloved Opera web browser a user pointed to this great site that has thousands of previous versions of various software programs. It has the old WinAmp, it has the all the old WinZips. Since they give the file size of the program you can even see where the software writers went bad, like when WinAmp went from being a 2 meg application in version 2.8 (that I still use) to bloatware in version 3.x with 4 megs. You don’t double a program’s size without making it way more troublesome. Similarly you can see WinZip going from 280kb in version 3.2 to 6 megs in version 10. When will they ever learn? And see how there are 8 versions of DirectX 9.0c, all with different release months. Typical Microsoft incompetence, not using revision numbers and needed to release it 8 times before it even begins to work. On the bright side, you can see the muted growth of the fantastic Irfanview picture and movie viewer—from 489 k to 990k, but there is only a small increase with every release, it never just doubles in size from one release to the next, a sure sign of trouble. Firefox and Opera are there, well, just go check it out if you are tired of the latest bloatware and want something nice and compact, like my dear old WS_FTP LE version 5.06 FTP program. Sometimes vintage programs are as sweet as vintage wine.
