A Tesla electric car stalled out – Friday fun link

August 15, 2008

Here is a link showing a Tesla stalled out up in the VC territory on Sand Hill Road in Silicon Valley. It may have run out of juice or it may have been hit or it may have broken. No big deal, I don’t want to turn into the TMZ of electric cars here, the real thing I wanted to point out was the comments. As someone that has been in a fair share of failed VC funded startups I loved this one by “LongAgoYahoo”:

How many VC’s does it take to push a stalled Tesla through an intersection near Sand Hill Road?

Answer: 7

  • 1 To Push (Associate)
  • 1 to see M. Moritz walk by and go grab everyone else so they can be in on the deal.
  • 1 To Tell him how he should be positioned and his execution sucks. (Jr Partner)
  • 1 To stand there playing with his blackberry (Partner)
  • 1 To arrive 2/3′rd of the way through and ask irrelevant questions (Entrepreneur in residence)
  • 1 To compliment him, give decent advice then pass on actually helping (Sr partner)
  • 1 To reluctantly approve the pushing, subsequently interrupt the pushing, replace the pusher, demand 40% ownership of the Tesla when it makes it through the intersection, and claim credit for the pushing on his blog (Sr Partner)

When you have been through the meat-grinder that is a VC startup this is pretty funny. I remembering asking my buddy why all the technical people’s shares were locked out for 6 months after the IPO. He said matter of factly: “That is so the finance guys get rich and we end up with nothing and are forced to keep working.”
