Synopsys v Magma ruling: what does it mean for Magma users?
I read the news today that finally phase one of the Synopsys vs. Magma trial is over and the case is now moving to phase two. You can see Colleen Taylor's well-balanced coverage of the judge’s ruling here. I noticed too that some of the other biz and trade papers have only posted Magma’s interpretation of the judge’s ruling and not Synopsys’, at least at the time I write this, and looking at Magma’s current stock price, which jumped up almost $2, you would think Magma won.
But I noticed in Ann’s write up, Synopsys is claiming that the judge has ordered Magma to hand over several patents to Synopsys and IBM and some of those are patent pending. So is that a victory for Magma or Synopsys? Do the patents affect old or current tools? The word “pending” in “patent pending” would suggest the patents relate to newer tools. What does the ruling mean for users of Magma’s older Blast lineup of tools and what does it mean for users of Talus?
BTW–Talus is a finalist for an EDN Innovation award! So is it still a Magma innovation?
Magma reps please feel free to respond here.
