News Leak: No-Leak

January 18, 2007

I'm currently wading through nearly a month's worth of email and RSS feed backlog, before the next deadline bag o'bricks hits, and came across this Slashdot head-scratcher. Remember the leaky, counterfeit electrolytic capacitor issue (more here) that continues to cause the premature demise of various electronics devices, notably computer motherboards? Well, last week at CES, Gigabyte introduced a line of 'solid capacitor' motherboards based on the now-trailing-edge Intel 945 core logic chipset (the company also sells i965-based 'solid cap' mobos). Quoting from ExtremeTech's coverage:

Solid capacitors have a higher tolerance for higher temperatures and they also perform better with higher frequencies and higher current than electrolytic capacitors. The superior heat resistance and better electric conductivity will allow PC enthusiasts to tweak the highest levels of performance from their system without fear of excessive capacitor wear or exploding capacitors.

Nothing like marketing to turn a bug into an up-sell opportunity. And how much up-sell? The press release provides the model numbers; let Froogle be your guide. Your thoughts, readers?
