Cheap Gas = Free Emulation Software: Today Only!

October 28, 2008

Three months ago, CodeWeavers (whose Windows-on-OS X and -on-Linux API emulation versions of open-source Wine I recently discussed) issued a six-part "Great American Lame Duck Presidential Challenge" (CEO Jeremy White’s words, not mine) to George W. Bush, consisting of goals related to fuel and food prices, job statistics, housing and international justice metrics. Specific to petroleum, White promised that if gas dropped to $2.79 per gallon, he’d offer his company’s products (including licensed technical support) for free one-day download to all.

Lo and behold, gas prices did fall to $2.79/gallon (on October 14, to be precise), at least temporarily, and at least in Minnesota’s Twin Cities region. And lo and behold, White’s followed through on his commitment. Head to the company’s website for download links to CrossOver Games and Pro for both Linux and OS X, along with a license registration entry form. CodeWeavers’ main servers are understandably down at the moment due to the massive traffic influx, but this temporary page still has active download links (at least for me) and promises a serial number (in exchange for your email address) "in a few days."

Remember, today only. Don’t procrastinate!

p.s…here’s the list of the other five goals (any of which, if met by the end of W’s term, will prompt another CrossoOver freebie day). Thanks to Lockergnome for the details (since CodeWeaver’s site is down, and I can’t find a backup of the original at the Internet Archive’s WayBack Machine):

  • Return the stock market to its 2008 high
  • Reduce the average price of a gallon of milk to $3.50
  • Create at least one net job in the U.S. this calendar year
  • Return the median home price to its January 1st, 2008 level
  • Bring Osama Bin-Laden to justice
