Interface Overkill: Share Your Thoughts

May 10, 2007

This blog post references my cover story 'Interface Overkill? Is eSATA Necessary For Your Next System Design?' in EDN's May 10, 2007 edition. It's one of a series of web addendums to the print writeup.

I've shared a lot of data with you in this hands-on project, and I've highlighted some portions of it that particularly caught my eye. Here's your chance to weigh in with your analysis of the trends I showcased, as well as to point out data points that you found interesting (and which I either overlooked or was unable to discuss due to print pagecount constraints).

I'm hoping for a lively discussion and debate, both between you and I, and between you and the other readers of this blog. I'll also encourage the vendors showcased in the article to monitor Brian's Brain and weigh in with their thoughts when appropriate. So don't be shy; comment away!

Hi Brian, Yeah my brain was pc-centric not mac-centric when I was describing bootability. The USB bios boot is for flash devices only and USB1.1. Here is someone that says they have a way to do it though...: www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176 I was surprised and disappointed at the powerPC (G5) mac firewire and USB performance, I haven't gone back to try Intel platforms. Hit up Intech for some good benchmark software. Barry

Dear Miami Bob, thank you very much for the flattering feedback. Regarding item costs, because EDN is a long-lead print publication, my article first drafts are due several months prior to the final publication date and my ability to alter the text subsequent to first draft submission is limited-to-nonexistent, so I resist putting pricing in my writeups. Google Froogle (now called Google Products), Dealnews and Techbargains are all good places to monitor prices and look for good deals; in fact, I remember the OneTouch III Turbo being on Dealnews (I think) just a few days ago. Regarding FireWire400 vs 800, please see my website addendum 'Analysis Downloads and Additional Results'; more generally I recommend you check out all of the addendums, links to which you can find at www.edn.com/article/CA6437950.html#Online%20addenda%20exceed%20print's%20storage%20capacity

Great article - well done! Near the end of the article you stated "However, Web research gives inconclusive information on whether I still need to install an obscure Windows ?hot fix? to unlock all of FireWire?s potential. After I get a definitive ruling on the matter from Microsoft, I?ll rerun my FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 tests on the OneTouch III Turbo Edition if necessary." Did you ever get an answer? Also, you didn't have a lot to say about the costs involved. Did most of your equipment and interfaces come from the vendors on loan? I realize prices are changing daily, but any overall opinions you have would be interesting. Thanks again for all the hard work and the great article, Bob.
