A Crimson Screen of Death?

January 12, 2006

As I mentioned a few months back, the infamous BSOD is banished in the coming Windows Vista era, replaced by a red successor. Make that crimson; King Crimson to be exact. Following in the footsteps of his good buddy Brian Eno, who composed the default startup sound for Windows 95, well-known guitarist Robert Fripp recently spent a day with Microsoft creating sounds for the company's upcoming operating system release. Channel 9 captured the footage, which you can watch and listen to for yourself here (browser- and operating system-agnostic download and IE-required streaming options are available). Here's a telling quote near the end, on the post-jam session objective; "to take 3 hours, maybe, four hours of raw material and find the essence and trim it down to somewhere between 2 and 6 seconds". You can also peruse the commentary from Ars Technica, the Register and Slashdot.
