Dispatches From Taiwan: The More Things Change...
…the more they remain the same. So I’ve concluded after spending the day at a confluence of five conferences here in downtown Taipei:
- Display Taiwan
- Opto Taiwan
- Lighting Taiwan
- Solar Taiwan, and
- PTICS Taiwan
Here’s just a small chunk of the overall show floor space:
In the six hours I was at the Taipei World Trade Center, I perused hundreds of booths. Although I’m on the other side of the world from my country of origin and residence, and many of the customs here are very different, I’ve noticed some key similarities to Stateside technology shows. Vendors here also use pretty girls to draw the attention of (predominantly male) passers-by, both in virtual form projected on flat panel displays:
And in real life:
They also know that the way to a man or woman’s wallet alternatively passes through his or her stomach:
Speaking of which, the Subway Sandwich shop on the 2nd floor still serves the Seafood and Crab sandwich (here called the Seafood Delight) that I can’t seem to find any more in United States franchise locations. My stomach was happy at lunch today. And if you’re curious, KFC (i.e. Kentucky Fried Chicken), McDonalds, 7-11, and Starbucks are also in Taiwan…though the latter’s thankfully not on every street corner in Taipei…
