Mandelbrot: Code Complex? Not

December 29, 2006

My prior post reunited me with a dear old friend; my first (I think, it's been a while!) multimedia-themed feature article (and its accompanying website addendum), which I wrote just over a year after joining EDN. In that piece, I covered not only wavelet image compression but also the even more advanced fractal image processing scheme. Fractal compression hasn't gained widespread adoption, at least for video, due both to its proprietary IP nature and its massive processing and memory requirements. But the theory behind it is quite fascinating. And speaking of fractals, I'm reminded of a recent RSS feed I saw which shows how, with only a single line of C code (multiple lines, to be precise, joined by semicolons), you can generate your own Mandelbrot set. Enjoy!
