An Economical Route to Cellular Data Sharing: The Big A-Ha

April 23, 2006

Clicking around in the Kyocera KR1's various setup screens this morning before heading off to James Cameron's keynote, I found one that, by default, disabled connection to 2G (ie 1xRTT) networks (this screenshot shows it after I enabled it). I presume, by enabling this setting, that my prior problem connecting to Verizon's NationalAccess network will be resolved. The KR1 also supports optional disable of SSID broadcast (which I've activated), a nice supplemental security move beyond enabling WEP or WPA encryption support.

For another perspective on the KR1, check out this Cool Tools column from Network World's Keith Shaw.
