Aspirations (Mine and Yours)
I confess I wasn't completely enraptured when management first approached me about doing a blog, following in the path blazed by long-time compatriot Maury Wright. It wasn't like I had a bunch of spare time on my hands and was sitting around looking for more things to do, after all! The bandwidth problem got addressed when EDN's newest editor, Mike Santarini, came aboard and inherited the longest-running portions of my editorial 'beat', programmable logic and semiconductor memories. And, the more I thought about what opportunities a blog would afford me, the more jazzed I got about the idea.
I've distilled those opportunities down into a short list, which I'd like to share with you and invite your feedback on:
1)Best-case, it takes around four weeks for something I write up to appear in print in an issue of EDN. A blog gives me instantaneous publishing capability; I can cover a topic as it's developing.
2)Brian's Brain will also give me the opportunity to cover topics that aren't strictly aligned with my traditional editorial 'beat', and in fact I'll potentially be able to hold forth on subjects that EDN traditionally doesn't cover.
3)Whereas historically EDN has embraced a 'just the facts' editorial style, blogs also commonly include a certain amount of analysis and opinion-stating. I look forward to having the opportunity here to share my views on various technology issues, and my reasons behind them….
4)….and I very much welcome your feedback on my views, and expressions of your views. Yeah, you can drop me a private email if you want. But I'd much prefer you take the more challenging (and ultimately more rewarding) road of publicly posting your comments, thereby sharing them not only with me but also with other blog participants. Let's get some juicy dialogues going. We likely won't all agree, but if we're respectful of each other's perspectives we'll all benefit in the end.
So there you have it, my hopes and dreams for Brian's Brain. The blog's been going for a week now, and I figured I needed to get my wish list out there for you all to critique before the clock spun any further. Whaddya think? Let the dialogue begin…….
