HBB1 Followup

September 7, 2005

I've been using the Hawking Technologies HBB1 Broadband Booster (mentioned in a previous post) for a few weeks now, and am still quite pleased with it. A couple of notes for those of you on static IP connections:

  1. My initial configuration of the unit was incorrect, caused by incomplete and unclear documentation. After clicking on the Configuration page's 'Enable Static IP Mode' checkbox to enable it, in the 'ISP Router IP Address' box you need to enter the WAN gateway address (i.e. in my case the SBC Yahoo gateway server that my router connects to), not your router's WAN address (i.e. your router's static IP WAN address).
  2. Then, after power-cycling the HBB1 and my router and DSL modem in the sequence outlined in the documentation, I needed to explicitly click on the 'Start Auto Rate Detection' button before the HBB1 would fully and correctly configure itself.

By the way, this morning I received a RSS feed from DealNews indicating that right now the HBB1 is available for $42.40 after rebate, with free shipping, from Buy.com. For the record, I've got no financial or other relationship with either Buy.com, DealNews or Hawking Technologies….just wanted to pass along a good deal!
