AACS 0wn3d?: Behold the Keys

January 13, 2007

And so it begins (thanks, Digg). The silver linings in the dark cloud for the Blu-ray and HD DVD camps (both of which employ AACS….as I've previously mentioned, Blu-ray's additional BD+ security mechanism is not yet implemented), are two-fold, at minimum:

  • This has hit post-Consumer Electronics Show, so both formats' backers didn't have to spend their entire time at that all-important conference responding to questions about the security circumvention. Overall, I was surprised by how little the threat of AACS vulnerability was brought up by the press at CES, considering that the muslix64's post on Doom9 was almost two weeks old at that point. But come to think of it, considering the technical incompetence and deficient long-term memory of the average news reporter, maybe I shouldn't have been surprised after all….
  • Both camps are, at least in the near term, probably going to sell a whole lot more hardware as a result ;-) The $200 (or lessPC-compatible Xbox 360 HD DVD drive is a particularly likely beneficiary of circumvention-enthused consumers' attention.

More as I learn of it (and here's the coverage from Engadget and Slashdot). A happy hacking weekend to you all. And if you're coming into this late, and need some spinning up on exactly what I'm talking about, see these chronologically-ordered back posts:
