Farewell poor EV1, we barely knew ye

March 24, 2005

According to this recent Slashot posting, the last of GM's EV1 electric cars was transported to the GM Desert Proving Grounds in Arizona earlier this month for 'final disposition'. Sorry to see this early experiment in breaking the chains of petroleum dependence end, but clearly the industry learned something from GM's efforts; I'm encouraged by the growing momentum of follow-on hybrid vehicles. As revolutionary as the EV1 was, from an emissions standpoint it only displaced the source of the problem from the tailpipe to the power plant. Until wind, wave, water and solar power for generation of electricity become more pervasive, global warming will remain a serious threat.
