Advanced Analogic Technologies AAT4620: Integrated super-capacitor charger IC reduces charge time

June 12, 2007

Targeting high-side-load-switching applications in PC-modem cards, the P-channel AAT4620 current-limited MOSFET power switch charges a supercapacitor, typically used to average out high-pulse currents without exceeding the host-power-supply specifications. This supercapacitor-charger IC integrates circuitry for limiting current, protecting the PC-card connector, continuously charging the capacitor, and notifying the system when it is ready for use. The switch provides two independent, programmable-current limits for controlling current during host/card negotiation. When the thermal dissipation is low, the integrated current limiting allows the capacitor to charge to 98% of its final value. Additional features include a 40-µA typicial quiescent current and a 1-µA supply current in shutdown mode. The AAT4620 costs $1.34 (1000).
