Advanced Analogic Technologies AAT3663: Battery-charger IC monitors internal die temperature

Suiting single-and dual-cell applications, the AAT3663 1A linear-battery-charger ICs charge two lithium-ion cells. Operating from an ac adapter or a USB port, the device monitors the internal die temperature and gradually steps down the charge current to avoid thermal shutdown. Features include a 4 to 13.2V input-voltage range, a 6-µA quiescent current, and a –40 to +85°C operating temperature. The device uses an external resistor supporting a 100-mA to 1A user-programmable charge current. The IC provides a programmable charge-termination-current feature, sending the device into sleep mode when the charging current dips below a predefined threshold. An integrated, programmable-charge timer shuts down charging functions upon detection of a defective battery cell or a disconnection to the battery-current path. Built using the vendor’s ModularBCD process, the device integrates fully isolated CMOS at multiple voltages, complementary bipolar transistors, and robust power devices. Available in a 3×3-mm TDFN-14 package, the AAT3663 battery-charger IC costs $1.38 (1000).
