Remembering Randy Pausch, VR pioneer

July 25, 2008

Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch passed on today after fighting liver cancer. He was a well-known pioneer in virtual reality but he appears to have been a virtuoso at life. You owe it to yourself to watch his CMU lecture “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.”

Wow Dave, you're a lucky guy! From the video, you can clearly see how dynamic this professor was. Classes with such people are always quite special.

I had the honor of taking a class on user interface design from Professor Pausch back at the University of Virginia in the mid-90's. He was a VERY dynamic professor and had a loyal following of students. His big project at the time was called "Alice", a framework for easy VR programming. Later, at CMU he continued work in this vein and created the famous competition among teams creating virtual worlds. He will be missed.
