Hagerman’s Blog: Straight from the Mind of the Engineer

September 23, 2007

For months, I’ve been following Jim Hagerman’s blog and it’s time I let you know. Hagerman lives in Hawaii and runs his own audiophile company (Hagerman Technology). He designs and builds a variety of high-end audio products. I found his Web site while searching for a turntable-to-USB product. Hagerman offers one called The Ripper, which is available in kit form. I’ve bought the kit and plan to build it, some day when I’ve got the time.

Meanwhile, Hagerman’s blog is a stream-of-consciousness slice of life from an engineer and entrepreneur who is chronicling his daily ideas for all to see. He says he does this for his own records, but I think it makes fascinating reading. Highly recommended.

I have "ripped" some old vinyl LPs that aren't available on CD, but I used an Edirol R1 digital recorder plugged into my stereo to copy the signal from my existing turntable. Then I improve the WAV files with an audio editor on my PC before burning an audio CD or making MP3s. Results can be quite good, especially after applying an intelligent click-and-pop filter, but it's time consuming. For people who don't already have a record player, the USB turntables are a good solution.
