NASA Details Latest Hubble Side B Plans

October 6, 2008

I wrote about Hubble’s troubles a few days ago. The Hubble Space Telescope is currently off line due to a communications-formatter failure. As of Saturday, NASA’s plans call for switching Hubble science instrumentation communications to Side B on Wednesday, October 8. Engineers have carried out a dry run (it was a paper run, so “dry lab” might be a more appropriate description) that was apparently successful enough to go forward. Meanwhile there’s a spare Science Instrument Command and Data Handling (SICDH) system at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland (presumably sitting in storage for the last 20 years) that’s undergoing pre-flight testing and qualification. If the new/old SICDH box qualifies, expect to see it added to the list of repair items that will eventually go up on the Shuttle repair mission, now postponed until some time next year.

Meanwhile, I watched an engrossing program about Hubble on the National Geographic Channel last night. It’s called “Hubble’s Amazing Universe” and what’s truly amazing is the massive amount of astronomical and astrophysical science that Hubble has racked up in the last 18 years. Highly recommended viewing for anyone interested in Hubble and space. Next broadcast: Sunday, October 12. Set your TIVO now.

Failed C&DH at 30 days, 120 days and now 12 days. Another 4 days of being down. Good job Government folks who were told that this would become an operational nightmare....

In addition to the SI&CDH issues now ACS is in trouble.

How about that total failure of the B side today 6/15/2009. This could be the end of HST. Side A is marginal. Lost all command ability. Beyond belief they would even fly this box when operations told them the box did not pass VEST testing. They did not listen....Summer solstice this weekend maybe we can keep HST down for good and get our families back - no job is better then this job.

You would be in a better position to know than I, HubbleWife. NASA has been quiet about Hubble repair efforts.

So... How about that EMI testing? Think they will make May? HubbleHusband is looking for new job - God Bless him.

Your correct about the time thus; HubbleWife worries about the stress HubbleHusband is under. Hubble project is killing my husband and his co-workers. Hubble dominates everything; can't even plan a vacation/dinner or weekend time. The Hubble project is stealing family time and life from the employees...not worth it... find a job with work/life balance.

Hubblewife: I cannot verify what you claim. It's counter to the detailed information NASA is releasing on a spare they claim is at Goddard. If NASA launches a replacement in February as planned, it's not likely to be a newly built box. There's not nearly enough time to build and test such a thing. There isn't time to even find those old components even if they're stored in that warehouse along with the Ark of the Covenant found by Dr. Jones.

My husband works on hubble, NASA does not have a spare; they are building a new box.
